I came to Dommerich in the fall of 1972 on a transfer from another Orange County school that had to cut a teacher because of low class size.  I remember my principal said I was going to a great school, but I had no idea how lucky I was.  I taught third grade for two years at Dommerich, and then my third year there I taught a 3-4 combination of gifted students.  That started me on a career in gifted education that I pursued later in a California school district where I started a gifted education program from the ground up and nutured it to grow in size and scope for the seven years I taught there until I left teaching in 1985.
However, my years at Dommerich were the best.  The staff was dedicated and professional, the students were full of excitement and enthusiasm and the parents were supportive and cooperative.  I'm sorry I'm so far away in California and will not be able to join the reunion and renew old friendships and memories.

What an honor to have been an instructional leader at Dommerich Elementary.
My tenure as principal at Dommerich began in January, 1993, and continued through July, 2008. During that time I worked with and became friends with some of the most wonderful parents in the world. Dommerich parents always demanded that our first objective was to provide what is best for all children. These parents taught me much about life, about parenting, and about just caring for others.
All of this is reflected in each of our student alumni and in the current students. Our students always have been interested in achieving, in learning, and in giving. I found these students’ thirst for knowledge was their constant next horizon. They always were learning.
Having had the opportunity to serve with the Dommerich staff was a dream anyone would want to be part of. Every staff member always saw the child was first, and always responded to the child’s needs. Dommerich’s teachers believe in the importance of taking the children to the next level of learning, and of having them think about thinking as they travel this path of education.
And the Dommerich community has been wonderful, celebrating the success of our school and all that we do here.
Yes. Dommerich is a magical place to live, raise children, attend school, and be a life-long learner. I will always be grateful to have been a small part of this successful Learning Community called Dommerich.
Dommerich left a heart print on me.

Can't believe the big day is almost here. It has been so much fun reading about all of you! Thanks especially to the committee members from "the good old days" who thought of this reunion, designed the web site, and really got things going! Since retiring in 2003, I've been doing reading testing with Orange County Public Schools for several weeks 3 times a year, as well as keeping up with the "old gang." I have many happy memories of the students, parents, faculty and staff I worked with my 36 years there. Look forward to hearing from you and seeing you Saturday!

I came to the school in1964 and for the next two years the elementary school was housed in the junior high school building.  That second year my class watched  the Dommerich building being built, and when it was completed the children carried their desks, books, etc. to their new classrooms. That was an exciting day.  While I was there I taught the second, fourth, fifth, and sixth grades.  I enjoyed my 23 years at Dommerich.

I was a teacher's assistant at Dommerich from 1996-2002. My two children attended Dommerich, and my youngest one is graduating from Winter Park High School this year and will be attending FSU in the fall.  I went back to school for teaching after leaving Dommerich and I am now in my fourth year of teaching at Maitland Middle School, right across the street!  I would like to thank the teachers at Dommerich, and especially Mrs. McNabb for the guidance and support you have given me in my teaching career.  I learned so much about teaching from all of my colleagues at Dommerich.  My daughter, Emily, (she is at SCC) and my son, Kevin will be attending the reunion with me.  I look forward to seeing all of you.

PS I teach 6th and 8th grade Social Studies.

The only years I taught school were at Dommerich Elementary from 1971 to 1975.  Dorothea Willis hired me to be a 5th grade teacher; and I was also there for a short time, when Roy Eldridge became our principal.  They were wonderful years; I was blessed to have the opportunity to work in a school with a wonderful faculty and students who, for the most part, were most eager to learn.

I quit to be a stay at home Mom; when my daughter was born in 1975 and then my son
followed in 1977.

I'm looking forward to seeing the teachers and students  who hold a special place in my heart.

I loved teaching at Dommerich from 1977 until 1986! The parents, teachers, students, and administrators came together to maintain “Dommerich standards.” We were proud of our school and put extra energy into getting things done exceptionally well. As a district-level curriculum resource person for 20 years after that, I was privileged to continue working with Dommerich educators and students in the areas of reading and writing.

I was very lucky to be hired by Roy Eldridge and then to work for Bob Holbert after Dr. Eldridge was asked to go lead principals at the district office. Both men were dedicated, talented leaders with a vision of community.

My students led the school in gathering food and clothes through our community service project:  “A Time to Share and Care at Dommerich.” We decorated the stage and donated what we had collected to the Salvation Army during a student assembly.

My students and I studied and learned by using best practices in reading, writing and mathematics. Our class was a Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System (FDLRS) demonstration site where teachers from several counties came to see students learning and working together to create a community of learners. The students were teaching teachers.

Once a year, Roy Eldridge and Lynn Mosley energized us for the faculty-sixth grade softball game. I practiced for weeks ahead of the game with kindergarten teacher Chaidi Anderson (Vaccaro) so we would be ready. Under Dr. Eldridge’s coaching, teachers ruled and won each year! Weekly, I joined with principal Bob Holbert, secretary Helen Greenman, nurse Ruth Conniff, teacher Joanne Loggins, and others in a Dommerich bowling league. That camaraderie extended our teamwork at school.

I enjoyed being on the faculty hospitality committee with Nancy Martin. I spent quality time with Pam Walton (Feldman). I made many friends. Some of us still keep in touch and feel blessed by our time together at Dommerich.

I knew I would miss Dommerich as much as I have.  The students and faculty I worked with will forever be in my heart.  Mr. Eldridge hired me and I taught at Dommerich for twenty years - one year in 3rd grade, ten years in 2nd grade, and nine years in 1st grade.  My family moved to DeLand in 1999 and I began teaching first grade at L.S. McInnis Elementary School that Fall.  I will be retiring this Spring, for a total of 36 years in teaching.
My husband and I travel on weekends and on school vacation times in our motor home, enjoying campgrounds and state parks.   We also visit our son and his family in Tennessee.  My granddaughter is now six years old and is to ready to begin first grade herself.  I look forward to the time I will now have to spend with her.

I arrived at Dommerich in 1973 fresh from the University of Florida and eager to begin my first teaching job.  Naturally, I was convinced I had all the answers.  It took me about 15  minutes to realize I didn't know anything.    Lucky for me, I couldn't have come to a better place.  I was surrounded by master teachers who were more than willing to share their amazing wisdom and teaching skills.  What a great collegial environment I found at Dommerich.  I will always be especially grateful to two wonderful women, Ramona Pietkiewicz and Jean Kaufman, who  were so kind, supportive and encouraging to me.  Also, since my professional career eventually included being an elementary school principal for 23 years, I couldn't have had a better role model than Dr. Roy Eldridge who  showed by example that you could be a great instructional leader...and still have a lot of fun doing it.  P.S.  Anyone still remember the legendary "See me, D.W." notes that could ominously appear in our mailboxes?

The opportunity to spend time with family has always taken priority. I consider the years I spent at Dommerich formative in many respects. The bonds formed between teachers, students, parents and staff remain strong.

The atmosphere within the school and the caring nature within the community provided the close knit relationship rarely seen or appreciated in today's world.

I taught at Dommerich from 1972 - 1987. My reward came in obvserving  our students and faculty grow and nuture the educational and social ideals to produce outstanding citizens who would contribute is so many ways. The support I received from the parents, staff and students made coming to school a joy each day.

As the years have quickly gone by, I often think about the impact and experiences which mutually left each of us a better person.

I am honored to be included and remembered for this reunion. It is with anticipation that I await the arrival of this event.

I taught at Dommerich from 1987-1997.  They were the best years of my teaching career to date.  I was lucky nough to teach with the best in Orange County.  The community was so welcoming and the parents and students .. well, I just fell in love with all of them!  I was truely blessed to have the opportunity to be a part of that school history.
I still remember the trips to Williamsburg...especially the one where all the 5th grade teachers went on together.  They were such fun! And Gil had it planned to the Tee!  Such wonderful memories of Dommerich. To many to tell!  I have missed all of those I befriended and can't wait to see all of you again!

I taught 6th grade during the '66'67 school year.  Prior to teaching I substituted at Maitland Jr. High/Elementary School.  A new 6th grade class was formed after there being an overload of students that year, and I became the teacher.

In 1973 I became involved in the Additions program.  Soon after that, I was in charge and had the privledge of working with Roy Eldrige and Bob Holbert.  During this time the Additons program supported a volunteer lead art program, due to not having an art teacher.  We had over 200 volunteers who supported many aspects of the school.  We were recognized as one of the top ten volunteer programs in the United States during this time.  It was a rewarding position to be a part of.

I am the grandmother of two current students.  Meghan and Martha-Grace McLean (2nd and 3rd grade) and two previous students, Carter and Katelyn Swann (Sr. WPHS and Soph. WPHS).  Both my son and daughter attended Dommerich, JoEllen McLean and Michael Swann.  Currently, my daughter fills my legacy of volunteering and being involved with the school.  My husband and I continue to live in the neighborhood and enjoy seeing how Dommerich is a positive influence in neighborhood life.  Looking forward to the reunion.

I was excited to hear about the Dommerich Reunion, but not at all surprised that Dommerich students could and would organize such an event.  They were and always will be the very best at everything.

At age 29, I was introduced to the staff as the new principal.  It was obvious to the experienced staff that I would need lots of help to become a good principal.  A teacher who was nearing  retirement came up to me after the meeting and put her hand on my shoulder and said, "Don't worry, young man, we'll take care of you."  That teacher was Frances Murrah and did they ever take good care of me.  It was an honor for me to be associated with the most competent, capable staff ever assembled.  When I arrived, there were many great staff members and each time I had a chance to fill a vacancy, I was very careful to choose the best and brightest person to fill that position.

The student body was exceptional in every way.  There was talent galore academically, artistically, and in every possible area.  There existed an intellectual curiosity that is rare to find today.

The parents were amazing in their support for the school.  The ADDitions program, under the brilliant leadership of Martha Swann, was recognized as one of the top 10 in the United States.  No task was too large or small for the PTA; from moping floors after a Spookghetti Dinner to standing for hours at the carnival.

I still remember fondly the many programs, plays, musicals, and other events that make an educational experience so much richer.  Those have become more rare in today's testing obsessed environment.

As I reflect back to those Dommerich days, I know that those were the most rewarding of my career.  It was a golden age for me.

I am saddened though by the passing of many of the outstanding staff members who contributed so much to the success of Dommerich students.  My warm memories of them will continue forever.

I look forward to seeing you May 2nd.

P.S.  Teachers beware, I still have some shaving cream left.

I was brought to Dommerich Elementary from Ocoee Elementary by Mr. Richard Weidley to teach Gifted Education-Grades 1-5 in 1987.  I spent 4 years in Gifted, 3 years teaching 5th grade and 2 years in second grade before moving on to Union Park Elementary.
In 1987 I served as Dommerich's "Teacher of the Year" and was chosen later in that year, a the " National Teacher of the Year" for "Invent America"
Over the nine years spent at Dommerich, I worked with the whole student body.  I dressed as Nicholas Gilman in authentic Colonial garb on Constitution Day explaining his role in the signing of the Constitution.
Halloween, I was the deep-throated, mysterious storyteller dressed in a bright orange tie and flashy pumpkin socks.  All 520 students in the school were invited to my darken portable to sit among flickering pumpkins, cornstalks and vegetable men to hear "The Legend of the Jack-o-Latern"  I always enjoyed decorating my room for the Halloween season.
The winter holiday took me to each classroom to share in the true swamp dialect of "The Cajun Christmas"
I organized and escorted educational travel experiences for Dommerich, creating "The Colonial Club,” where we traveled to Colonial Williamsburg in full Colonial costumes.  We even marched that year in the Winter Park Christmas parade.
Our class produced several classroom dramas, including "Tom Sawyer "that was viewed by every classroom in the school.
Our 5th grade class participated in "Biz Kids" each year and gained very valuable learning skills.
Each year the entire school participated in the Dommerich Invention Convention, where all the students shared their inventions.  This was after I presented to the staff the curriculum of Invention.
I retired in 2003 after 41 years of teaching in the elementary classroom.  I was a long ways from my humble beginnings in a one room school in the wilds of Idaho.  During those 41 years I was always willing to share with colleagues and students at each school, all that I had to offer.
I would love to hear from any or all my former classroom students or the students who attended and remembered my storytelling, travel experiences to Washington and Williamsburg or remember any of the other special happenings you remember.
Thanks for the wonderful memories and the special parents who supported us through the years..

What great fun to read the Classmate Sign-Up for Dommerich Reunion!  Mr. Rowe was kind enough to run it all off for me to read and keep.My years teaching at Dommerich were WONDERFUL.  I had more fun everyday teaching there for 26 years!  You students, your parents, the other teacher, and staff were the greatest.  I certainly am planning to be at the reunion.  I'm moving in January 09 from my home on Mojave Trail.  My new address will be: 1206 Springhouse Circle, Park Springs, Stone Mountain, GA 30087.  I would love to hear from so many friends with whom I spent those precious years.

As a young teacher I taught at Maitland Elementary the first year it became Dommerich 1964 to 1965.  I remember my class having to carry all their books to the new classroom.  What a delightful change!  We were so proud of our new campus.  The following year 1965-1967 we had trees planted and named for us...mine may be where the new school will reside.  I taught there until 1971 and I loved every minute of it.  Since I lived in the neighborhood I saw so many of my former students grow up and become meaningful adults.  We had fun as well as learned a great deal.

I was one of the original six elementary teachers who started teaching in1961 at the Maitland Junior High and Elementary School. Mr. Steve Voss was principal and I was a teacher and assistant principal. The new Dommerich Elementary School was built and we gladly moved into it in the spring of 1965 where I taught fourth grade for the next 20 years. I was the CRT for 10 years and served as guidance counselor. In my retirement I keep busy with my grandchildren, travel and enjoying life at our beach home. I see many of you from time to time and it is great to hear about all the wonderful things that you are doing. I am excited about the big Dommerich Reunion and look forward to seeing all of you there.

My name was Trish Allison when I was an AAIM teacher there from 1989 until 1993.  I loved teaching at Dommerich!  If it had been up to me I would still be teaching there today.  But, my life took some turns that I wasn't expecting.  After Dommerich I spent two years in Volusia County and then ten years in Lake County.

A few years ago, I returned to Orange County.  When I went to the job fair, applicants were randomly assigned to tables for interviews with principals.  And, who do you think I sat down with?  Robbie McNabb!  We had a great talk and I would have loved to come back to Dommerich, but I live way over on the west side of the county.  Luckily I landed in a wonderful school, Windermere Elementary, and now I'm the Gifted Resource Teacher!

I had my first daughter, Ashley, when I was teaching at Dommerich.  Since then I have remarried and I have two other wonderful children with my husband, Ron.  Ashley is in 10th grade, Ryan is in 6th grade, and Cassie is a second grader here at Windermere.

I am so looking forward to the reunion in May.  I want to thank Krista Rogers for contacting me!  And, if you're thinking about contacting a long-lost colleague, I hope you'll do it.  It made my day to hear from her!

Then I was the CRT, curriculum resource teacher, until 1986, when I went on to become an assistant principal at another school.  Then in 1988 I became a principal, and remained in that job at three different schools, until I retired in June of 2003.  My years at Dommerich were absolutely wonderful.  Roy Eldridge, the principal, hired me.  And we had the greatest faculty and staff!  And of course, our students and parents were outstanding.  We were always very proud to be a part of Dommerich because we were continuously striving to be the very best!  I loved my years there!

Mrs. Dorthea Willis hired me to teach music at Dommerich in 1973. I taught general music (Room 201) to all the classes, along with string orchestra and chorus. Mr. Roy Eldridge became our new principal when Mrs. Willis was selected to be a supervisor at the county office (ELC). During the next few years the music department added band in sixth grade, ukulele and recorder in the upper grades and Suzuki violin in kindergarten and first grade grade. Various grades performed a variety of musicals such as Godspell, Let George Do It, It’s Music, Entertainment Now and Then, The 1890 Music Hall Revue, Let’s Hear It For America and Sing Out America. The chorus performed a winter and spring concert each year both at school and in malls and retirement homes. In the 80’s the Suzuki program grew to over 70 students and was available in grades K - 5. The Dommerich Suzuki Players performed hundreds of concerts throughout Florida and took a concert tour every spring break for 10 years, including a European Concert Tour in 1985 performing in Rome, Vienna, Salzburg, and Paris and a concert Tour to England in 1989. All of that beautiful music would not have been possible without fabulous students and total support from the Dommerich principals, faculty, staff, and parents. It was the BEST!!! I have been retired since 2001 and still miss being at Dommerich. It was the greatest situation any teacher could have. I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to work with so many dedicated educators, talented students and supportive parents. I was blessed to get to work with thousands of bright and enthusiastic children over the 28 years I taught at Dommerich. Retirement has brought me extensive travel with my husband, gardening, raising butterflies, yoga, walking, volunteer work, and my two fabulous grandchildren, who live in Winter Park and spend lots of time at “Ema’s” house :-) I am so proud of the students who are coordinating this reunion. It is a great idea and I look forward to seeing many of you there. I would love to hear from you and learn how you are doing. I hope life has been as good for you as you were for me. You were all a very important part of my life and I thank you for that. With much affection, Mrs. Hotaling PS. Do you still remember ta ta ti-ti ta?

I taught first grade at Dommerich from 1969-1975.  It was a wonderful experience for me.  Not only did I enjoy all the students and families, but I also learned so much from the faculty.  I was a brand new teacher then....now I am retired after teaching twenty-three years in Orange County.  Hope to see old friends at the reunion.

I taught fifth grade at Dommerich from '79 to '86, I believe.  While there, I had the pleasure of teachng my daughter, Cami, and my son, Cade.  I cherish the friends I made while teaching at Dommerich and continue to keep in touch with some of them such as Deedra Salmons and Chris Hines.  I also became close to parents of students I taught.  Bruce and Barbara May parents of Melissa, Julie, and Stephen remain dear friends.  I have Dommerich to thank for these and other  precious friendships and often wonder what became of some of the talented students I had the privilege to teach.

Mrs. de Guehery died January 2005 with advanced Alzheimer's disease.  She dearly loved her years teaching at Dommerich Elementary.  She often would speak of individual students, and had an amazing recall of names of students that she had taught.  She also loved her friends on the faculty - they luncheoned together into the mid-1990's.  Her students will not be able to appreciate how much she loved her work - I genuially believe that she would have paid to come to Dommerich to teach.
